URGE alumni visit Oct 5, 2012

URGE 2010 cohort members Bobby Dygert and Dan Padgett, both now working for Google, and URGE 2009 cohort member Becky Hager, now in the Statistics PhD program at NC State, visited the Department on Friday Oct 5, and chatted with current students. 2010 cohort member Michael Mastroianni, and "honorary URGE alumna" Becky Lo, were also present. Conferences for Zurek group

Northeast Regional Meeting of the ACS, Rochester, NY, Sept. 30 to Oct. 3, 2012.

There are two exciting Inorganic Chemistry sessions planned. I am organizing one featuring keynote talks by younger chemists who are becoming known for great work in catalysis: Alex Radosevich (Penn St.), Rory Waterman (U. Vermont), Daniel Weix (U. Rochester), and Eva Zurek (U. Buffalo). Henry Gysling is organizing another session on the same day that will include Kit Cummins (MIT) and Craig Hill (Emory), as well as Mike Neidig, a great new faculty member at Rochester.
We intend for each session to have a mix of faculty, postdocs and students. You may apply to be part of these sessions by submitting an abstract at http://abstracts.acs.org. Please select Inorganic General Session (Oral) so that the abstract is routed appropriately. Please note that the deadline for abstracts is August 10, so you have less than two weeks left to apply. http://nerm.sites.acs.org

3rd NY Conference on Applied Mathematics

Dear Colleagues,

I would like to invite you to participate in and/or to present at the 3rd
New York Conference on Applied Mathematics (NYCAM), which will be held at
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy NY on October 13, 2012.

This conference series aims at bringing together researchers from New
York State, the province of Ontario and the Northeastern United States
who are working in diverse branches of applied and computational
mathematics. A primary intent of the conference is to strengthen ties
between applied mathematicians/scientists working in the region. The
first and the second NYCAM were held at Rochester Institute of Technology
in 2009 and at University at Buffalo, SUNY in 2011.
The responses to them were very enthusiastic, with wide range of participants
from undergraduates, graduates, postdocs, faculty, to industrial researchers.
More information about the upcoming conference as well as the previous ones can be found from
http://homepages.rpi.edu/~lif/NYCAM/index.html. The online registration is now available.
As you would see that the presentations are of 3 different forms: a
10-min advertisement talk which will be in the morning with the whole
audience, a standard 25-min talk in one of the parallel sessions in the
afternoon, and the poster. There is also a special issue in
International Journal of Applied Nonlinear Science, which is dedicated to
publishing some papers from this conference. Limited funds are available to
partially support the travel (mainly the lodging) of those who present
 their research.

We hope to see you at the conference and/or to share your research.
On-line registration should be submitted by September 20, 2012.
If you want to be considered for financial support,
please register no later than September 15, 2012.

 Best regards
 Fengyan Li

Downstairs, there are 15 desks for 2 chairs each (double if facing both directions), and should be enough chairs for 40 or more. We should open the room up to its full size.

Upstairs, for lunch, there are 16 tables and 64 chairs.
